1. Ethical Principles

Karatay Journal of Art and Design applies the highest standards of scholarly publication ethics. The journal follows and considers the recommendations and guidelines developed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Manuscripts that do not comply with these standards are not published in the journal. Manuscripts that do not refer to qualified information and do not contribute to the literature in the relevant discipline will be considered inappropriate by the publication policy in accordance with the criteria for academic/scientific publication and will not be published.

Manuscripts submitted to the journal are peer-reviewed by double-blind reviewers and editors. Manuscripts submitted for publication in the Karatay Journal of Art and Design should not have been published elsewhere (including papers presented and published at scientific conferences) or be on the waiting list for publication.

The ethical responsibilities of authors, editors, reviewers and readers are outlined below.

  1. Author’s Responsibilities

  • Originality and Plagiarism: Authors should submit only original articles. Partial or complete copying of previously published articles is considered a breach of publication ethics. If other work has been used in the study, it should be appropriately cited. All references used in the article should be cited. Plagiarism constitutes all forms of unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
  • Authorship of the Paper: Authorship should be limited to those who have contributed significantly to the work. Authors’ names should be listed according to their contributions. The corresponding author ensures that all contributing authors are included in the list of authors.
  • Conflict of Interest: All authors must include a statement disclosing any financial or other conflicts of interest that might be perceived to affect the results or interpretation of their article. All sources of financial support for the project should be declared.
  • Data Accuracy: Authors must guarantee the accuracy of the research data. The use of misleading or falsified data is unacceptable. Authors may be required to submit raw data associated with the manuscript for editorial review, and these data should be retained for a reasonable period after publication.
  • Multiple, redundant, or concurrent publication: Authors must not have submitted the same manuscript to another journal for publication or review. Simultaneous submission of the same article to more than one journal is considered unethical behavior.
  • Reporting Standards: Authors should provide an accurate description of the work performed and an objective discussion of its significance. A manuscript should include the necessary details and references to enable the work to be cited.
  • Legal Responsibility: The author (s) are responsible for the scientific, ethical, and legal content of the articles published in the Karatay Journal of Art and Design.

1.2. Editor’s Responsibilities

  • Impartiality: Editors should evaluate submitted manuscripts impartially, regardless of the authors' identity.
  • Confidentiality: Editors guarantee that all information about the submitted manuscript will be kept confidential until publication. Authors should not allow any conflict of interest or competition between editors and reviewers.
  • Conflict of Interest: Unpublished material disclosed in a submitted manuscript may not be used in the editor’s or co-editors’ own research without the express written permission of the author.
  • Review Process: Editors should ensure that the manuscript review process is objective, fair, and expeditious.
  • Publication Decisions: It is the editor’s responsibility to decide which articles will be published in the journal. Editors evaluate articles without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, national origin, or political philosophy. The decision should be based on the accuracy, validity, and significance of the article and the appropriateness of the scope of the journal. Existing legal requirements regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism should also be considered.

1.3. Reviewer’s Responsibilities

  • Confidentiality: Reviewers should keep the content of the article confidential during the review process.
  • Objectivity: Reviewers should be objective in their evaluations and avoid personal opinions.
  • Conflict of Interest: Reviewers should not have any conflicts of interest. Unpublished material described in a submitted manuscript cannot be used in the reviewers’ research.
  • Timely Evaluation: Reviewers should complete the review process in a timely manner and notify the editors.
  • Objectivity Standards: Reviewers evaluate manuscripts without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, national origin, or political philosophy. The evaluation of the article should be objective. Reviewers should express their views with supporting documentation.
  • References: Reviewers should identify cases where the published work cited in the article is not cited in the reference section. They are obliged to report any significant similarity or overlap with previously published articles.

2. Publication Policy

Karatay Journal of Art and Design aims to provide a platform for research in the field of art and design. The journal publishes original and qualified articles in art, design, architecture, graphic design, fine arts, and other related disciplines.

2.1. Types of Publications

  • Research Articles: Studies that present original research findings. It includes full Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections.
  • Review Articles: Review Articles provide a comprehensive summary of research on a certain topic, and a perspective on the state of the field and where it is heading.
  • Application Reports: Studies presenting the application processes and results in the field of art and design.
  • Art Criticism and Analyses: Writings containing critical and analytical approaches in the field of art and design.
  • Book reviews: Critical reviews of books published in the field of art and design.

2.2. Evaluation Process

  • All articles will be evaluated by the editors for content, theme, conformity with the editorial policy and scientific quality. Articles that do not comply with the editorial policy and article template, and that contain many spelling mistakes will not be evaluated.

All articles will be evaluated by the Editor to ensure that they fit the content and theme of the journal. The Editor will then forward them to the Area Editors. If the article does not fit the theme of the journal, the authors will be informed as soon as possible. The area editors assess the article’s suitability for the field, its compliance with the journal’s writing rules, check for plagiarism, use plagiarism checker programs again if necessary, and inform the editor of any necessary corrections. The area editor has one week to review each article. Articles that pass the preliminary review are sent by the area editors to two peer reviewers who specialize in the area. The reviewers have 21 days to evaluate each article. The reviewers evaluate and report on the article. The authors are then informed about the reported articles. In the case of one positive and one negative decision by the reviewers, the editor may ask for feedback from other editors. As the journal uses a double-blind review system, the rights of reviewers and authors are reserved. All processes are controlled by the editorial board. Reviewers have the right to request more than one correction and to see the manuscript again after correction. Once the article has two accepted letters from reviewers, the editor and area editor will check the corrected article and then send it to production for publication order. All publication rights of accepted articles belong to Karatay Journal of Art and Design. Articles cannot be published or copied anywhere and cannot be used without reference. As a non-profit journal, no Article Submission Charges(ASCs) or Article Publication Charges (APCs) are charged to authors.

2.3. Open Access Policy

The Karatay Journal of Art and Design has an open access policy. This ensures that all published articles are freely available to researchers.

2.4. Retraction / Post-Publication Correction

The Karatay Journal of Art and Design has adopted the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) policy on publication and retraction. An article may be retracted if significant errors in the study’s conduct, analysis, or reporting compromise the integrity of the published work. In addition, breaches of publication or research ethics may also lead to retraction. The original article is marked as retracted, but can still be available on the journal’s website for future reference. However, retracted articles are not considered credible and should not be cited or used for further research. The retraction will also be published in the current issue of the journal. For the sake of transparency, when changes are made to the original article, the original article is corrected and linked bi-directionally to the published change notification detailing the original error

3. Screening for Plagiarism

  • Authors are required to upload their plagiarism reports scanned by plagiarism detection software (İThenticate) such as Turnitin or Intihal.net, to the system. Articles with more than 15% similarity, excluding references, are rejected directly without going to the evaluation stage. An ethics committee approval document must be submitted for studies that require ethics committee approval (e.g. research involving human or animal subjects).

4. Publication Rights

  • The copyright of published articles is held by the journal. Authors agree that their articles will not be published elsewhere.
  • Authors are required to agree to publish their article as an Open Access article and to use it under the Creative Commons (CC BY) license.

These Ethical Principles and Publication Policy reflect the Karatay Journal of Art and Design’s commitment to transparency, reliability, and scientific integrity in its publication processes.
